Closet Organization

By Anna Lynn C. Sibal

Choosing the perfect outfit for the day or for a certain occasion can be such a pain. How many times have we caught ourselves saying that we have a closet chock-full of clothes, but absolutely nothing to wear? Sometimes, it takes so much time and effort just to find the right clothes that you need to get you through the day that you eventually end up giving up and just pulling whatever is closest at hand to you and making do with it.

Oftentimes, we do not realize it but what is killing us when we are choosing what to wear for the day or for a certain occasion is the actual state of our closet. Try to think back: when was the last time you actually cleaned your closet? If that is the case for you, then it is probably high time you got some cleaning rags and polish and your vacuum cleaner and get to work with clearing out that closet.

Closet organization will help you find the right clothes faster and more efficiently.

First, take out all the stuff you are storing inside your closet. Just take everything out, and I mean everything. Dust the shelves, give them a good polish, and then vacuum the floor.

When you are done with that, sort through the contents of your closet and throw out the things you no longer use. If you still have that sweater that belonged to an ex-boyfriend of yours from ten years ago, throw it out. If you have a pair of sneakers with gaping holes in it, throw it out. If you have old T-shirts that are faded and have stains and holes, clothes that you do not even wear for whenever you do some heavy house chores or yard work, throw them out. Get rid of the junk to create more space in your closet.

Next, try grouping your clothes together according to outfits. Matching pieces of clothing be kept together, especially if they are pieces that you always wear together. After you are done with grouping your clothes according to outfits, start grouping the rest according to garment type. For example, all pants must be hung together in the closet. Same for skirts, shirts, blouses, dresses, et cetera. And then, group your clothes by color. That way, you do not have to tear your closet apart just to look for the matching pieces together whenever you dress for the day.

So you won't run out of closet space, consider folding your sweaters and T-shirts instead of storing them in hangers and group them according to color on the shelves.

Your belts, scarves, wraps and other loose items should either be hanging from hooks or hangers. Color coordination works here too.

As for your shoes and other footwear, have a shoe rack or hanger to store them in, or keep them in their shoe boxes. So you won't be tearing those boxes apart when looking for the right shoes to wear, you can consider having clear boxes or labeling the boxes, preferably with a picture, for easy reference.

Your hats should also be kept in boxes and stored on shelves. If the hats are not so delicate, like ball caps or fedoras, you can hang them on hooks.

If some of the clothes in your closet are out of season, like your winter jackets or your summer dresses, put them in storage in a separate cabinet and just bring them out when the season comes.

A clean closet helps a lot in achieving a clean look, and a clean look is always great.
